As a UK Consultant Gastroenterologist, I regularly see patients who have been struggling with digestive symptoms for months — sometimes years — before seeking specialist advice.

Many symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, reflux, or changes in bowel habits are common. However, knowing when these symptoms require expert assessment is key to avoiding delays in diagnosis and treatment.

Common Digestive Symptoms I See

Patients often present with:

  • Persistent bloating

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  • Acid reflux or heartburn

  • Diarrhoea or constipation

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Abnormal liver blood tests

In many cases, these symptoms are benign — but in some, they may indicate underlying conditions such as:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Liver disease

  • Coeliac disease

  • Less commonly, early malignancy

When Should You See a Specialist?

You should consider seeing a gastroenterologist if:

  • Symptoms persist for more than 4–6 weeks

  • Over-the-counter treatments are not helping

  • You have unexplained weight loss

  • You notice blood in your stool

  • You have ongoing abnormal blood tests

  • Symptoms are affecting your quality of life

Why Early Assessment Matters

Early specialist input can:

  • Prevent progression of disease

  • Reduce anxiety and uncertainty

  • Avoid unnecessary medications

  • Lead to faster, more accurate diagnosis
